In Hollywood and glossy magazines, yoga is usually associated with a Jennifer Aniston-type twisting her lithe body into a gravity-defying pretzel. So even though yoga is popular, it can be daunting to people who aren’t already bendy and buff.

“The average citizen thinks, ‘I can’t do all those poses. I’m not cut out for yoga,’ says Michele Olson, PhD, FACSM, professor of exercise science at Auburn University Montgomery in Montgomery, Ala.

TUESDAY, Feb. 28 — Researchers who used family trees dating back to 1811 to estimate the death risk for people with inherited heart rhythm disorders say their findings can help doctors determine when to screen and treat today’s patients with these disorders.

Sudden cardiac death can occur in apparently healthy people due to heart rhythm disorders. Genetic testing can identify people with an inherited heart rhythm disorder ;”>arrhythmia), but that raises questions about how and when to treat children who may not yet be experiencing symptoms, which can take years to develop.

In the study, researchers used Dutch archives to reconstruct the family trees for patients with inherited heart conditions, including long QT syndrome, SCN5a-overlap syndrome, CPVT and Brugada syndrome.

Reflect and Remember: Yoga on 9/11

This Sunday marks the 10th anniversary of September 11. Losing weight is not typically seen as an easy task. Add in factors like being a teenage girl with a body that is constantly changing, and losing weight may be even more difficult. Certain elements can aide in the success of weight loss as a newly released study conducted by Kaiser Permanente has shown. This study was funded by the National Institutes of Health and looked at 208 girls between the ages of 12 and 17 living in Oregon and Washington. The observations of the study took place in the years 2005-2009 with all of the participants being classified as obese at the beginning of the study.
